Dell is well known for being one of the world's largest manufacturers and suppliers of desktop PC and laptops.

Dell Inc. (NASDEQ: DELL) was established in 1984 whilst the soon to be owner of Dell, Michael Dell, was still at university. Originally called "PC's Limited", Michael Dell started his company with only $1000. Thebusiness model was simple: manufacture the PC's and sell them direct to the customer. Hence cutting out the need for a wholesaler or a retailer.

In 1988, after producing a couple of their own design computer systems, mostly with Intel CPUs, the company name changed to "Dell Computer Corporation", this followed a $300,000 capital injection from Michael Dell's family.

Selling direct was a good move for the "Dell Computer Corporation". Their website (link above) was first released in 1996 and their "direct to the customer" is their business model even today.
